In liceu a avut-o alaturi pe diriginta sa care il incuraja mereu spunand-ui ca va ajunge fotbalist mare... In vara lui 2000 aflat in Belgia, la un antrenament a ametit din senin si a cazut pe gazon pierzandu-si cunostinta. I-a spus fratelui sau Cristi ca mai bine moare pe teren decat sa se lase de fotbal. Acum cu toti ne dam seama cata dreptate a avut, Catalin si-a dat viata pentru culorile alb si rosu ale echipei Dinamo... Din primii bani castigati din fotbal Catalin si-a cumparat un apartament si si-a ajutat parintii sa construiasca casa din comuna natala, Branesti. Visul sau era sa-si construiasca o casa mare in care sa adune toata familia... In 1993 a inceput relatia de dragoste cu Roxana. Din 1997 au devenit foarte apropiati petrecand impreuna aproape tot timpul liber pe care il avea Catalin. Intetionau sa se casatoreasca spre sfarsitul lui 2000. Pe 5 octombrie insa poveste de dragoste a luat sfarsit. Ce poveste trista. Acum Roxana poarta verigheta pe care a primit-o de la Catalin si pe care este inionata data la care Catalin si-a luat adio de cei dragi. La gat, poarta un lant primit de la Catalin, lant de care este agatata verigheta pe care aceste nu a mai apucat sa o poarte... Era considerat cel mai sufletist jucator. Pe teren alerga enorm, facea intotdeauna risipa la efort pentru echipa sa. IUBEA FOTBALUL! Ionut Lupescu l-a considerat "cel mai sufletist dintre "caini", in timp ce Florin Prunea a spus o fraza memorabila: "A fost un om cum putini am cunoscut. Singurul care l-a invins cu adevarat a fost Dumnezeu." » S-a stins din viata in urma unui atac de cord la 5 Octombrie 2000. Plecarea prematura dintre cei vii a lui Catalin, a fost cea mai trista zi din istoria fotbalistica a echipei Dinamo Bucuresti. Familia, suporterii, coechipierii, antrenorii, conducatorii si apropiatii care l-au cunoscut nu-l vor uita niciodata. Catalin Haldan de acolo de sus a devenit INGERUL PAZITOR al echipei Dinamo! » Piciorul lui Catalin. Dinamo juca in Giulesti cu Rapid. Scorul era 2-1 pentru gazde si meciul se afla in prelungiri. Aflat la 16 metri de poarta Mihalcea loveste cu capul mingea care se indreapta spre poarta. Aceasta loveste bara din dreapta apoi cea din stanga, dupa care desi parea ca nu va intra in poarta, miraculos loveste un smoc de iarba si intra in poarta adversarilor. Atunci am simtit ca defapt Catalin a fost acolo si si-a ajutat echipa sa obtina un rezultat bun.
